When to come

Summer begins well before Easter in this eastern corner of Andalucia and lasts until November. The beach resorts are busiest in July and August, but here's an idea of what you can do at other times of year:

• The week before Lent Carnaval is an extravagant week-long event.

• March and April – the valley is lush and green; a good time of year for walking and birdwatching and for trips to Granada and Almería.

• Easter has its most elaborate and dramatic celebrations in Andalucía. In Almería, the pentitential parades of Holy Week (Semana Santa) end in dramatic candlelit processions at dawn on Good Friday, with Easter Day more of
a family occasion.

• May and June – great beach weather. Mojácar holds a mock Moors and Christians battle on the first weekend in June. The same month sees the Night of St John/San Juan – the eve of 24 June – celebrated with bonfires and fireworks at Garrucha and many other of Andalucia's beaches. It's said to be good luck to have a paddle just after midnight…

• July and August are the hottest months. The bar and club scene is in full swing in Mojácar Pueblo and Mojácar Playa and there are local fiestas with fireworks and dancing all night. Virgen del Mar – Almería's annual shindig, with parades, shows of horsemanship and lots of drinking – takes place in the last 10 days in August.

• Autumn – the sea stays warm into November, it's perfect weather for golf or for a last-chance taste of summer heat.

• Winters are mild compared with northern Europe and there's plenty of sun. For special prices for long lets, please enquire.

The villa is part of a country estate with its own golf course in the foothills of the Cabrera mountains.

Turre

is the nearest village, a five minute drive, with bakery, supermarket with good deli counters, post office, bars, restaurants and an internet café.

Mojácar

A little further on is the Moorish hill-top town of Mojácar, a collection of white cube-shaped houses on a rocky outcrop, where you'll find a wide choice of restaurants and nightlife. We are a 20-minute drive from the beach at Mojácar Playa which has all shops and services.

Beaches

The beaches between Mojácar and Almería are thought of as the best in the region. You can easily find quiet coves and bays backed by a chiringuita (beach bar-restaurant). Between Tranquila and Almería is the Cabo de Gata-Nijar natural park. Tucked between headlands of volcanic rock are low-key resorts offering good food, sandy beaches and clear sea.
