A coastline stretching 800km from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic means that fresh seafood in even the simplest restaurants in Andalucia is excellent.
Meats grilled alla plancha (over a wood fire), gazpacho (chilled tomato, olive oil and garlic soup), and game-based dishes also appear on restaurant menus.
For the catch of the day, head to Garrucha at about 4–5pm when the fishing boats come in, where you can buy straight from the quayside. There's a good fish counter in the Mercadona supermarket in Mojácar Playa, too.
There are supermarkets in Turre and Mojácar, but it's an experience in itself to shop at the local markets. A guide at the house lists the market day at nearby towns. The Saturday market at Vera is particularly worth heading for, where dozens of stalls take over the town.
You can end the day back at Tranquila with a barbecue on the poolside terrace, overlooking the valley. But if you don't feel like cooking, there are plenty of places to eat out. The restaurants listed on the right are some of our favourites – ask us and we will be happy to tell you of more.
